The first detection of P. ramorum-infested rhododendron nursery plants in the U.S. occurred in 2001 in Santa Cruz County, CA. About SOD
Phytophthora ramorum manifests in two types of symptoms depending on the host plant. In tanoaks and certain other oak species, it causes bole or trunk cankers, while most shrubs and non-woody plants exhibit leaf spots, often accompanied by shoot dieback. Trunk cankers are particularly damaging and frequently result in tree death. Additionally, weakened oak and tanoak trees that are infected by P. ramorum frequently become targets for bark beetle attacks, which accelerates mortality.
